Tata Motors recently surprised the audience at Auto Expo 2023 by unveiling two new CNG models: the Tata Altroz i-CNG. Positioned as a fuel-efficient hatchback, the Altroz i-CNG variant offers an eco-friendly alternative for reducing its carbon footprint.
Let's delve into the details of this CNG-powered offering.
Design and Colors:
The Tata Altroz i-CNG retains the stylish aesthetics of its petrol-powered sibling, with only the i-CNG badging on the boot lid setting it apart. Notable design elements include projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, a shark-fin antenna, gloss black inserts, two-piece tail lights, an integrated spoiler, and C-pillar mounted rear door handles. Tata Motors has wisely maintained the captivating design of the Altroz, ensuring its allure remains intact.
Interior and Boot Space:
Contrary to the common perception of reduced boot space in CNG-powered cars, Tata Motors has ingeniously placed two CNG cylinders below the luggage carpet in the Altroz i-CNG. This clever design allows the boot space to remain unchanged compared to its petrol-only counterpart. However, the lack of a spare wheel may concern some.
Stepping inside, the Altroz i-CNG boasts a dual-tone interior with dominant black upholstery for the seats and dashboard, complemented by beige accents on the roof. The silver finish on the upper section of the dashboard extends to the center console, creating a harmonious aesthetic.
Features and Technology:
Tata Motors has equipped the Altroz i-CNG with a range of features to enhance comfort, convenience, and safety. Standout features showcased at the Auto Expo included an electric sunroof, making the Altroz potentially the first CNG car in its segment to offer this premium feature.
Additionally, the Altroz i-CNG comes with a seven-inch Harman-sourced touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, leatherette seats, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, second-row armrest, height-adjustable driver seat, auto-folding ORVMs.
Safety features include:
Six airbags.
ABS with EBD.
Rear parking sensors.
A seatbelt reminder system.
A speed alert system.
The Altroz has previously achieved a five-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test.
Furthermore, Tata Motors presented a new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system at Auto Expo 2023, which is expected to be included in the Altroz i-CNG upon its launch. This updated screen promises improved graphics and touch response, enhancing the user experience.
Performance and Specifications:
Under the hood, the Tata Altroz i-CNG retains the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine in its petrol variant. This engine delivers 85bhp and 113Nm of torque, slightly reducing to 76bhp and 97Nm in CNG mode. The Altroz i-CNG will solely offer a five-speed manual transmission.
Regarding the CNG system, the twin cylinders in the Altroz i-CNG boast a combined capacity of 60 litres (water equivalent). Tata Motors incorporates several segment-first features, including a single ECU in the CNG range, immediate start in CNG mode, twin cylinders for storage, a modular fuel filter, an auto-switch function between fuels, a micro-switch for safety during refuelling, a leak detection feature, and a fire protection device.
These features ensure optimal performance and safety while utilizing CNG as a clean fuel option.
Price and Launch:
Although Tata Motors has yet to announce an official launch timeline for the Altroz i-CNG, it is expected to arrive in the second quarter of FY23. As for the pricing, the Altroz i-CNG could fall from Rs 8.50 to Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
Once launched, it will directly compete with the CNG-powered versions of the Baleno and Glanza, providing consumers with more options in the CNG segment.
Hence, the Tata Altroz i-CNG presents a compelling proposition for eco-conscious car buyers seeking a fuel-efficient hatchback. With its stylish design, spacious interior, and a host of features, it aims to offer a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.
Additionally, the integration of CNG technology and the emphasis on safety features highlight Tata Motors' commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction. As the demand for cleaner and greener mobility solutions continues to rise, the Altroz i-CNG represents a step forward in the automotive industry's efforts to reduce emissions and promote a sustainable future.
